The Survivor Justice Network National Survey

RISC is proud to partner with the Survivor Justice Network (SJN), a project of metoo. International, National Women’s Law Center, and Justice for Migrant Women that builds political power amongst survivors, to address the needs of survivors of gender-based violence, including sexual violence, on a national scale. The project will use evidence-based research as a platform for survivors and their allies to inform the national conversation on survivor justice policies and solutions. Incorporating input from survivors, SJN staff, policy makers, and allies from across the United States, the survey will inform the next phase of the Survivors’ Agenda to build momentum for the Survivor Justice Movement. 

The project is a survivor-led endeavor that uses trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and community-led methods to produce evidence-based, scientifically sound research to guide public policy. We are proud to center survivor voices in charting a pathway for justice.

The Survivor Justice Network is a national coalition dedicated to ending sexual violence. We extend our deepest thanks to their member organizations for their ongoing commitment to this project. Their support through countless hours of discussion, draft revision, and advocacy for their communities has made this project possible!

We recognize that survivor justice has to start with survivors’ safety. Here’s how we will ensure security for survivors and allies who participate in our national survey:

• Digital Security: We do not collect your IP address or any digitally identifiable information.
• Anonymity: Your identity will be fully anonymous. We will not collect your name or other identifying information. 
• Freedom of Choice: It is your decision whether or not to participate in the survey. You can stop at any time. You can also skip any questions that you don’t want to answer. 
• Quick Exit: At the beginning of each module the survey will have link to a neutral page redirection google.com.

As the national survivor survey has come to a close, a clear need has emerged for a way for survivors to continue to give input to the conversation about ending sexual and gender based violence. 

We are please to announce a new project to support this need: the Survivor Diaries. 

Survivor Diaries is an innovative one-stop solution to centering survivors’ voices in the conversation about how to end sexual and gender-based violence. It features a diary-style app (forthcoming) where survivors can easily capture voice recordings about their survivor journey, revisit them later, and share them with others. 

FAQ

• Q: Where will my recordings be stored?
  • A: You can choose whether your recordings are stored locally on your device, or you can choose to upload them to our secure server housed in Michigan State University.
• Q: How will my recordings be kept safe?
  • A: The app features a secure sign-in process, a quick-exit button that fully logs you out of the app, and full control over where your recordings are saved and what they can be used for. If you give permission for your recordings to be used in research or featured on the project website, they will be fully anonymized.
• Q: What will my recordings be used for?
  • A: Only what you give permission for them to be used for. You can choose whether to keep them private so that you can revisit them later, or you can opt into participating in a wider survivor-led conversation with options like submitting your recordings to inform survivor-centered research or having them featured on our project website to share your story with other survivors.

Privacy Policy
If you choose to share your data with the Survivor Diaries project, it will be stored on our secure server to which only study team members and your Application Provider have access. We give all participants a subject ID number, to keep personal identifying information separate from your audio files. Personal identifying information, such as your email address, will be kept in a distinct password-protected folder separate from your data. You will have control over how your recordings from this app are used; if you give permission for them to be used in research with this application or featured on our website, audio and transcript excerpts will be entirely anonymized, including in any research publications.

As university employees, Survivor Diaries personnel may not be able to maintain the following information as confidential if the speaker reveals they are a current student or staff member at Michigan State University: child abuse, child neglect, relationship violence, sexual misconduct, stalking, retaliation, discrimination or harassment based on sex, race, color, national origin, religion, age, height, weight, marital status, or disability that is related to the University community, or an immediate threat to yourself or others. If you do disclose this type of information, we may need to report it to the MSU Office of Institutional Equity and/or the Department of Police and Public Safety.
